Functional
Medicine

The functional medicine approach seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease. Your body is evaluated as a whole, not just a collection of separate organ systems each addressed by separate medical specialties. Health is promoted as a positive vitality, not just the absence of disease. By listening to the patient and learning her story, Julie brings every patient into the process and tailors each treatment to address their individual needs.

Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what is sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs or stress-management techniques.

The Tree
Analogy

In order to understand the practice of functional medicine, clinicians often use a tree as a model. The leaves on a tree represent diseases and diagnosis, the branches represent signs and symptoms, the trunk represents a unique organizational system using core clinical imbalances and genetics, and the roots represent lifestyle and environmental factors.
